It is defined as a irregular and incomplete evacuation of hard and dried feces .In constipation fecal matter spend too much time in colon as a result colon absorb the water from the feces make them dry and hard.

Causes of constipation

Types of constipation

Primary constipation – It occurs without any clear cause sometimes referred as functional and idiopathic constipation
Secondary constipation – it is type of constipation that occurs as a result of underlying health issue or a side effect of medicine and as a result of lifestyle factors. Constipation is a symptom not a disease.

  • Staining with bowel movement. Excessive time need to pass the stool.

Vibandha

Constipation is known as be vibandha in Ayurveda .Vata is the dosa that is predominantly involved with it.
  1. Adyashan- eating before digestion of previous food.
  2. Langhan- fasting.
  3. Ati vyayam- extreme exercise.
  4. Agnimadya – indigestion.
  5. Ati -sheet padarth- over eating of cold fruits and vegetables.
  6. Sleeping in the daytime.
  7. Guru, ruksha food -heavy and dry food.
Vata pradhan vibandha- stool is dry, knotted, passing stool with pain.
Vatakapha Pradhan vibandha – milk curdling stools with some times mucous.
When the vayu dosha in the body vitiated stool become hard, knotted and dry and the channel become closed causing rectal edema aggregated by the vayu and the agni(digestion) gets vitiated as a result vayu move upward and stay block in the pelvic region.In addition, the vayu also disturb with the pitta and kapha from their own natural sites. The muscles of the colon get affected and the loose the power to ejaculate the feces out of the rectum.

Haritaki (terminalia chebula)
Ayurveda suggest using Haritaki is a rejuvenating agent for digestive system. It has the capability to balance all the three doses vata, pitta and kapha. So that’s why it is known as Tridoshic .It enhances the secretions of digestive juices and promote eliminating traped gases results in reducing abdominal distension. It is one of the best medicine to treat constipation because That’s why helpful in cleaning of intestine and removal of waste products throughout the body.
kutki (Picrohiza kurroa)
kutki traditionally used as hepatoprotective herb having tremendous healing properties. It have a qualities like laghu (light easy to digest) balancing kapha and Pita and the anti -flatulent property reduces the formation of gas in the alimentary canal which turns beneficial in bloating and constipation. The antacid property of the herb reduces the formation of excess acid in the stomach.Another major role of this drug is seen in the absorptions of nutrients in the body.
Erand taila ( Ricinus communis)
Erand taila are commonly known as castor oil. It comes from the castor bean. People have been used this oil as a laxative for thousands of years. The main fatty acid in the caster oil is ricinoleic acid which binds to the receptors of smooth muscle cells of your intestinal wall. It causes the muscles of the colon to contract. That’s why it is also used in uterine contraction during labor. It’s snigdha nature cause intestinal mucosa soft by which hard stool is easier to pass. Although castor oil can relieve constipation but it can also cause nausea and vomiting as side effect .Before consumption consult your doctor for prescribed dosage.
Mulethi is widely used as flavouring agent .Its antioxidant property help to treat metabolism. The presence of Glycyrrhizin and its compounds make it a good remedy for constipation, acidity, heartburn, discomfort in digestive system. It work as a mild laxative and help in bowel movement. It is a plant from the fabaceac family used as laxative .it includes hydroxyanthrace glycoside which stimulates the peristalsis of the colon and fluid accumulation, secretions resulting in expulsion of stool. It is recommended for the short-term treatment of acute constipation . Due to its irritant effect, It increases gastrointestinal motility and induces fluid movement in the lumen.
It is an Ayurvedic herbal Rasayana formation consisting of a three parts which are Amla , Bibhitaki and Haritaki.
